What I Learned

What I Learned

This week I watched a video on YouTube on how to learn braille. I learned a lot about braille and how it is actually easier to learn than I thought it would be.

Braille is a series of dots that are easy to remember. I learned a little song that helped me remember how the dots go. It went 'You approach a bridge but it's closed so you take the detour but realize you are on empty, so you fill up with fuel but now you are in grid lock, so you trade  your car for a Harley turn the ignition on and jump.' Each word starts with a letter from the alphabet and goes the Braille alphabet. I learned that Louis Braille, the man who created the Braille code, didn't originally add the letter W because French people don't use the letter W, but it was later added. I also learned that the first ten numbers are the sane as the first ten letters, you just put a different symbol in front of it. I could go on for days telling you what I learned about Braille but I am going to stop here.

I have learned that it was hard to find time do this project and that I was a little in over my head with this. If I could go back in time I would change my driving question. I have learned that I should do something I like and not just whatever can to mind first.

Braille

Braille

You now all those bumps that you always see on bathroom signs or on the number of a room, that's Braille. This week I learned about braille. I learned that Braille is the most common way blind people communicate, or write stuff down.

Braille came from a Frenchman named Louis Braille when he was a boy. Mr. Braille modeled the braille off a military code system.  Braille is a system of making raised dots on paper to form letters and words that are read by the blind with their fingertips. The basic Braille 'cell' consists of two columns of three dots. The dots are numbered 1-2-3 from top to bottom on the left side of the cell and 4-5-6 from top to bottom on the right side of the cell. Each Braille letter, word, punctuation mark, number, or musical note can be made up using different combinations of these dots. Braille can be written with a Braille writing machine (similar to a typewriter). It can also be written by using a pointed stylus to punch dots down through paper using a Braille slate with rows of small "cells" in it as a guide. This method of writing Braille compares to writing print with a pen or pencil.

Braille is the most common way blind people communicate. Through out next week I am going to watch videos and try to learn Braille as best as I can. Then soon I am going to try going 'blind' and see how different life can be.
 This is the Braille alphabet.

What I Learned

What I Learned

Today I learned about what causes blindness. Blindness occurs what the eye parts get damaged, either through illness or injury. I also found out that almost all blindness in the United States is a result of disease. Less than 3 percent is the result of injury. Some people who are blind can they see black or darkness or really blurry object, they can see a little. Other people can see lights or shadows, but cannot see anything clearly. These people are not legally blind but their vision is so impaired that they need help.

When interacting with a blind person you want to be very careful. Some things you should do is: introduce yourself by name and make eye contact when speaking, speak in your usual conversational voice. When a blind person enters the room, identify yourself. Indicate the end of a conversation, and let a blind person know when you are walking away. Feel free to use vision-oriented words such as "see", "look", and "watch." Be specific when giving directions. Don't grab the arm of a person who is blind or visually impaired: offer yours instead. Don't interfere with a blind or visually impaired person's cane, and don't pet or feed dog guide.

I think if you are going to hang out with a blind person you should look up what you should and shouldn't do. Over all when going some where with a blind person you want to be careful and be understanding of their condition.

What Is It Like To Be Blind

 Blind

What is it like to blind? How do people deal with blindness? How hard is it to learn braille? How would my life be different if I was blind? I choose this driving question because I wanted to see what life would be for them by trying it myself.

For my research I an going to read books, look up stuff online, watch videos, an see I if can talk to people who are blind. I am excited to learn braille and learn how they live their lives.  I hope I can find someone close to where I live because I could interview them and see what their every day life is.  When I find out all my information I am going to try being blind and how different my life is and how different school would be.

On this blog I will post my progress and the stuff I have learned. I will most likely post videos of me learning and doing braille. I will defiantly post my experience of being blind and how my life would have to change if I were to be blind. I can't wait to start this project and tell ya'll all about it.
